4 simple modifications to make the 2 lb Beach Lapidary Ltd tumbler nicer to use.
4 simple modifications that make the 2 lb Beach Lapidary Ltd tumbler nicer to use.
I have only had this tumbrel a few days but I had to make the changes shown in this video to make it a better machine.
The modifications a quite simple but hopefully you will find them well worthwhile.
Mods shown. . .
1. scribe lines around the drum, to indicate when the endcaps are fully home.
2. file the sharp edges/corners of the internal fins, to save your hands.
3. make and fit an air vent, so you can get the ends on and off easily.
4. file/sand the sharp edges around the outer edge of the drum, to save damaging the inner lip of the endcap.
There is a fifth mod you could make and that’s to remove the sharp edge around the inside of the drum, but don’t remove too much material that could allow thin wires to become trapped between the lid and drum. This again is to save your hands.
By the way if you don’t want to risk damaging your original end cap you can buy a spare from the company and modify that.
Please let me know if any of this helps you along with your tumbling experiences.
Key points. . .
Do not use metal when making the vent as it could contaminate the shot and jewellery, I used a brass bolt to plug the hole but that is on the outside so it won’t touch the bits in the drum.
When marking the lines around the drum and smoothing out the sharp edges of the drum, don’t damage the area where the endcap makes its seal to the drum.
Warm the endcap in very hot water before drilling a hole in it, this will prevent it from cracking.
Don’t over tighten the vent nuts. If you do, long term pressure on the plastic could cause it to spread and crack.
Use a sealant on the thread where it goes through the endcap.
And most importantly, keep on having fun!!
I have run with these mods for many hours without any problems and the machine is much nicer to use now.
Kind regards . . . Andy

I have recently purchased a Beach Lapidary Ltd, 2 lb capacity tumbler that can be used for polishing either stones or metal (jewellery) the end caps for the drum/barrel have an interference fit on to the drum, in other words, they are blooming tight. Great video. I bought a fancy bottle cutting gadget but dose not cut clean. Where can I get a glass cutter like the one you used?

    • @AndyDaviesByTheSea
      @AndyDaviesByTheSea 5 днів тому

      Hi, the cutter that I use in the video is one from a fancy 'stained glass' glass supplier. It has a cutting oil holder built into the handle. but you DON'T need that. Any old tungsten wheel cutter will do! Really, if you use it right, any old cutter will work! If you've got a fancy cutter and it's not working, the chances are that you're not doing something right. Things to remember. Press really hard, you should hear the wheel cutting into the glass and you should see a good clean, deep scratch/cut into the glass. The cut line/scratch should be continuous. If there are gaps in the line it won't cut properly. if there are gaps go over it again but try to avoid going over a good cut too much as the takes the edge of the cutting wheel. If there is a stray end of the cut line running off at an angle, because you have failed to join the ends of the cut together, it will fail. Let the combination of hot and cold water do the final bit. don't hit the glass but make sure that you give the glass long enough to heat through. Good luck. let me know how you get on. Don't forget, you won't win every single time, sometimes it goes wrong, I don't know why, but that's life! Kind regards . . . Andy

    could you cross-drill your through hole, so to open it you just loosen the fastener, rather than remove it completely?

    • @AndyDaviesByTheSea
      @AndyDaviesByTheSea 9 днів тому

      Yes, good idea! I didn't know what you meant at first, but I take it that you mean is, measure how far the air vent bolt, (or as you call it, "the fastener") goes in and then drill a hole sideways through to the tapped hole for the bolt in the plastic plug in such a position that this new hole is blanked off when the air vent bolt is screwed in fully. Thereby meaning I only have to turn the air vent bolt a few times to let air in/out. well done! Why didn't I think of that! In my defence I was thinking the longer the thread on the vent bolt the less likely it would be to leak. But I will do it. Kind regards . . . Andy

    You can always go get a car tyre valve rubber, and drill a hole in the lid, and pull the rubber air valve into the unit. Remove the schraeder core, and use a valve cap to seal the hole. Means you can also use an air pump to pop off the end cap. The warranty on this is a taillight warranty, it expired when the truck taking it from the Chinese factory turned a corner, and they no longer could see the rear lights of the truck....

    • @AndyDaviesByTheSea
      @AndyDaviesByTheSea 17 днів тому

      Hi, ok on the warranty!! It’s good to meet someone who thinks like me. One of my original thoughts was, ’can I use a tyre valve.’ It would be push fit into a simple hole?’ But I dismissed it as I really want the pressure on the outside not the inside. In other words, the valve would be facing the wrong way. But I like your idea of using the cap, I didn’t think of that. I did look in Halfords at bicycle innertubes but that gets messy. It’s often easy to slip into a complicated design, you can make anything, but usually the more elegant designs are very simplistic. All the best . . .Andy

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 17 днів тому

      @@AndyDaviesByTheSea Car tyre valve is generally very cheap, often you get them slightly used in reasonable condition, at least for this application, for free at any tyre fitment centre, complete with the cap, and of course you do not need the core at all.

    Would say drilling and tapping a small vent onto the one end fitting will be a handy next mod, that way you can vent the pressure while placing the cap on. Then you can simply make the one end cap a permanent fitting using some solvent, giving one less place for a leak.

    • @AndyDaviesByTheSea
      @AndyDaviesByTheSea 19 днів тому

      Hi, well done Sean you got it in one shot! I’ve only had the tumbler for one day and used it twice, and fitting some sort of pressure release valve is such an obvious product development to make. I want to make some kind of valve arrangement that will fit in the centre of one end cap. I’ll use plastic so as not to contaminate the shot with dissimilar metal. I was going to use a large nylon bolt and drill and tap it so that I can seal it bit I don’t have anything large enough right now. They say that after heating the endcaps to aid fitting them on, the cooling maintains a vacuum, (it will do for a while and it may help to pull the caps on a bit tighter but, I wouldn’t think it would hold a good vacuum for a week or two as it would be used for lapidary work, but I’m sure it’ll provide an adequate water seal.) So, the seal must be reasonable. I want to have a look around and see if I can find some standard plastic plumbing product or auto component that will do the job. I want to try and find something that anyone can find rather than make something special on the lathe. There has to be some garden irrigation or aquarium valve with a thread on it. Anyway, your assumption is correct, ‘Vent the blessed thing!’ Thanks for the interest in the video, it’s always nice to know that folks are paying attention and reading the description box. Kind regards . . . Andy.

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 19 днів тому

      @@AndyDaviesByTheSea How about simply drilling and tapping to M5, as that is a very common size, and you can easily get nylon screws in that diameter, and simply put a small O ring on the thread, and have it provide the seal. not going to need much to make it engage, and the end caps should be thick enough to get a few thread turns with M5, though you can always simply solvent weld a round PVC disk inside, and have the threads in that as well.

    • @AndyDaviesByTheSea
      @AndyDaviesByTheSea 19 днів тому

      @@SeanBZA Hi, funnily enough that’s pretty much what I have done. I found that I had some old hard plastic components in my plumbing junk box. I found an 8mm bolt that was off an old toilet seat hinge, (I knew it would come in handy one day,) I’ve put an M3 brass bolt down the middle of it and I’ve had the drum running for a couple of hours now. I will put it all on video as it makes a big difference to just how easy it is to use and hopefully it will be helpful to others. Since selling my company, one thing I miss is product development. I will always change things that make a machine work better. I’m just about to go and have a look and see if there is something like a tap/valve that would be easy for folks to get. I’m assuming that there will be some folks that don’t have taps where as they will have a drill and simple tools, drills etc. (Anyway, it’s good fun and I love playing) All the best . . . Andy

      @AndyDaviesByTheSea Місяць тому

      Hi John thanks for the comment. I made the tool rack out of 15mm diameter copper water pipe. That's a standard (small) domestic pipe size in the UK. It's not very clear in the video but the rack on the righthand side, with the pliers and cutters on has 3 horizontal cross bars. What I have found is, if you drop some pliers/cutters on a single rail they can roll off, which is really annoying, so I have two copper rails side by side, that stops the roll off. The rails are 3/4" (20mm) apart, and that holds everything from large tin shears to small cutters etc. I've flattened the tubes so that they are about 5/16" (8mm) thick and that helps with the very small tools. I adapt and add things, hooks etc as the need arises. The thing is, make what you need out of what you can get. You could use timber but the joints won’t be as strong as brazed copper. You could make the inverted ‘T’ legs out of copper and ‘T’ joints and bolt thin strips on wood to that for the rails, but you’d have to stop it from collapsing sideways, if you get my drift? (stop the video at 4:04 minutes in and take in the detail) All the very best. . . Andy

      Hi, thanks for letting me know how you got on, that's great. You would think that the hinge manufacturer would have made some sort of explanatory video, but I guess if they hadn't got the sense to add a height adjusting screw, then they wouldn't dream of trying to help anyone with an explanation. Its a nice radio. I think your amplifier is distorting and also doesn't pass low frequencies all that well. A crystal radio like that one will sound quite good with good headphones. I'd bet the thing still works today.

      Hi Ken, thank you. It will be a pity when when there are no analogue radio transitions to receive with a simple detector like this. Seeing as though the capacitor is a dry construction, there's no reason to see it fail, and it's the same for the other few components in it. It's only moisture that might damage things if it got in. I have it wrapped and sealed in plastic sheet. Kind regards . . . Andy

      @graemezimmer604 Місяць тому

      @@AndyDaviesByTheSea Andy, it's not that the Capacitor (in the Amp) may have "failed", more likely it's simply a very small value. Hard to see but it looks like a 1uF tantalum (or even smaller). You need to draw a circuit of the Amp as well.

    It's great that your art is liked and brings material benefits. I like watching different creators create or repair things, it's much more interesting than news. I probably won't make a stained glass window, but who knows, maybe I will. But I have a plan on how to decorate the toilet door in my house. I would like to make a window in the style of a ship's porthole. The originals are terribly expensive. Under this window there would be a sign saying that the captain wish all strong winds.

I'm distracted again Greg, I'm installing an extract system in my workshop, but of course I'm not doing it the easy way and going through the nearest outside wall, that's too windy so it gets complicated but it'll be effective. Hi Andy, I'm from Dundee, Scotland. It's nice to see Jamie Oliver is useful for something, that makes a change. I have no use for emery boards specifically but gorilla glue keeping paper stuck to a surface without flaking off is actually a usecase I may have for a couple things I have in mind. Thanks for the video, Chris.

      Hi Chris, thanks for watching and for the feedback. I love to know where in the world folks are but I particularly like to think that something that I have learnt or done, and passed on to others is actually going to help them in some way. As for Jamie, I haven't cooked anything of his but my wife does and it is good. I've been very pleasantly surprised by the, 'monkey glue' (as one guy called it) it stick with what I would call a 'chemical bond' in as much as you can't peel it off like some glues, but it will also bond to your skin!! All the very best . . . Andy

      Hi Greg, always great to hear from you. It's the only glue that I have found that will hold 2mm wide strips of emery when I cut the boards down to size. So helpful for my messy soldering!! I don’t know if you noticed but Victory First commented below that his niece and nephew call Gorilla Glue "MONKEY GLUE". I like that so I think I’’ stick with that name for it, if you’ll forgive the pun. I hadn’t realised that I was so close to Wisconsin when I was in Detroit, man that’s another story! From what I’ve seen on the screen, movies and web, Wisconsin looks to be a really beautiful place but boy when you get snow you sure get plenty of it. All the very best my friend . . . Andy

      Hi Andy thanks for getting back to me. Well, I guess you've seen quite a verity of videos in that time as my interests have changed. Its funny how it goes but looking back it seems that the highest interest folks have had in my videos is in things related to World War 2. One is where I show the inside of a detonator nose cone of a delayed action bomb, another is where I show an spy radio transmitter, but lately a video about how to adjust the height of a particular type of badly designed front door hinge has helped a lot of folks and saved them from hassle and expense. I love the feedback on that on as folks have fixed the problem for themselves. But now I'm moved on to jewellery making. Thanks for sticking we me. By the way, originally I'm from Birmingham, England as you may have guessed from the accent. All the very best my friend . . . Andy

    Hi Andy, great past three videos. Just caught up on them as UA-cam's notifications lately and even showing videos from those Im subscribed to in my subscription feed has been very iffy. Always great to see the thought process behind hobbiest activities. The work looks great, the plan looks great, and the techniques require a skill that I think you've gotten pretty good at by now. Similar to glassblowing, its not something you see every day and is one of the great fascinations. Good to see you still active, Chris.
